I’ve posted this before but Virginia asked me to do it again because this song came up on a test of hers today for her history of music class. I knew immediately that it was a Má vlast (My Country or My Homeland) by Czech composer Bedřich Smetana; I nailed it! It’s one of my favorite musical suites.
The thing about this song is though, is that every time I listen I can’t help but sing Turisas along to it.
Just listen to the song. A minute and fifteen seconds in you won’t be able to help but belt out A Portage to the Unknown. I doubt the tunes similarities is just a coincidence, especially when you consider that a lot of metal musicians are classically trained; and even more so when you consider who Olli’s dad is.
Just a thought.

Warlord, the lead singer of Turisas. Metal at its finest.
Going back to my roots on this one. Probably gonna keep producing work in this style.
I was thinking of a few different phrases for this one.
“Stand up and fight!”
“I want you for the Varangian Guard”
When I saw Turisas in Los Angeles Warlord spoke about supporting your local micro breweries for five minutes and it was pretty tempting to put, “I want you to support your local micro brewery!” But I didn’t think anyone would get it.
